Two years ago, our group of friends spent the Saturday of Labor Day weekend out at Nissan Pavilion (now Jiffy Lube Live) tailgating for the Jimmy Buffett concert. The guys had a hard time being away from their TVs on the opening weekend of college football so they were continually checking scores on their phones.
RP, Maggie, TBW and Sean all went to law school at William and Mary, so they were very interested when it looked like William and Mary, a I-AA team, would beat Deez’s alma mater, the University of Virginia. The Tribe emerged victorious and they wouldn’t let Deez forget about it for a second.
Fast forward two years, Deez is now living in Charlottesville and W&M and UVA were scheduled to meet again. We are always looking for an excuse to spend time in Charlottesville, so TBW, Laurie, Sean, RP and I headed to C-ville for the rematch.
RP and I made it to town around 11am (after a detour for Chick-fil-A breakfast – priorities). After a quick stop off to grab some beer and necessities, we headed to Dana’s place to “tailgate.”
TBW and Sean set up redneck horseshoes (this game has to have an alternate name, right?) and RP settled into the prime TV game viewing spot, two games going at a time, of course.
The afternoon was spent munching on tasty treats, watching games and throwing some “horseshoes” indoors.
Before we knew it, it was 5:45 and time to head to the game. We had a short walk and quickly found our seats – which were excellent!
There weren’t many W&M fans, but RP and TBW made sure to cheer loud enough for all of us!
Sadly, the final score wasn’t quite like the score two years ago. UVA beat W&M 40-3.
Lucky for us, there were still many college games on TV after our game, so we headed back to Dana’s for pizza and more football.
In either a stroke of genius or madness, RP introduced TBW to Spotify and Sean, RP, and I stayed up WAY too late listening to 30 second snippets of songs that TBW found. As Sean said, “it was like watching Picasso with oil paint.” TBW continued to amaze us with the songs he would find even after listening for a couple of hours!
On Sunday morning, the six of us ventured to the Corner for lunch and then headed back to the D.C. area. RP and I took a detour to Wegman’s before breaking Manny out of puppy prison (the kennel).
Headed to NatsPark in a couple of hours for some day baseball and then RP and I need to start getting ready for our guests this weekend! One of my best friends, Lindsey, from back home surprised her husband with a trip to D.C. for his birthday. They get in on Friday and we’ll have a fun and sports filled weekend. But, this means I need to do some cleaning!
Happy Labor Day!
I’m so sad we missed this! Clearly W&M’s loss can be blamed on the newish mascot with his khaki pants, horrible.
Mags, he’s a Griffin – so he has on Lion pants. Duh. I’m so sad you missed it to. We miss you!
Looks like a blast! I love American sports and all of the tailgating, party fun that comes along with it! This is one thing that the Spaniard will have to get used to when we move Stateside. Thus far he thinks it’s pretty ridiculous. I told him he will have to suck it up and play nice or he won’t have any friends.
Your parties look like they would be a great immersion therapy for him. I’m inviting myself.
You and the Spaniard are welcome to an American sports party any time! I didn’t grow up loving sports, but I have definitely been converted. He’ll learn to love it – or he’ll just have to suck it up! Hope you’re having a great time Stateside!
